James A. Yancey Sr. Unsung Hero Award

The James A. Yancey, Sr. Unsung Hero Award

In loving memory of our late James Yancey, Sr., the Wilson Family Reunion proudly introduced the Unsung Hero Award in 2025. This award honors a man whose life reflected unwavering dedication, humble service, and a deep commitment to family and community.

For more than 30 years, James faithfully served the Wilson Family Reunion in countless ways — often behind the scenes, without seeking recognition or praise. His steady presence, generous spirit, and willingness to serve wherever needed became a lasting example of what true family leadership looks like.

Alongside his many accomplishments, James was a devoted husband and family man. He shared nearly 58 years of marriage with Ozener Sloan Yancey until her passing in 2010, building a life centered on love, service, and commitment to family.

A gifted mobile disc jockey for over three decades, James brought joy to generations through music. From rhythm and blues to gospel, jazz, and hip hop, he created the soundtrack for countless celebrations, gatherings, and memories. Even today, his legacy lives on through the music and fellowship he helped cultivate at the Wilson Family Reunion and throughout the community.

Beyond family, James dedicated his life to public service and community leadership. He made history as the first Black Chief Court Counselor for the 26th Judicial District in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Throughout his lifetime, he served on numerous boards and led several community organizations as president, always working to uplift and support others.

One of the clearest reflections of his servant’s heart is his continued commitment to delivering “Friendship Trays” — hot meals provided to members of the Charlotte community — a service he faithfully carried out for over 30 years.

The James A. Yancey, Sr. Unsung Hero Award recognizes family members who quietly give of themselves, work behind the scenes, and strengthen our family through service, humility, and dedication. These are the individuals who may not seek the spotlight, but whose contributions leave a lasting impact on us all.

Through this award, we celebrate the spirit of selfless service that James Yancey, Sr. so beautifully embodied and ensure that his legacy of love, leadership, and commitment to family continues for generations to come.
